2 Weird Phone Calls

We get all kind of phone calls here at the station. Some are so wacky that it's good for a laugh. Some are a tad off track. Then some are good for information.

Last Tuesday, Dec. 5, we got two in one night that left us shaking our heads.

The first call came in around 7 p.m., and the person left a message on our answering machine. It was a lady wanting Tom Suiter to give New York  Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter a call.

If you think that's good -- wait.

She then wanted Tom to tell Jeter that she had "come into some money" and wanted the Yankee All-Star to "handle her money" or invest it. That message got saved and played over and over and over. By the way, Tom has yet to get in touch with Derek Jeter.

Later that night, around 9:30, our producer, Brad Simmons, got a call from a guy claiming to be a sports agent. (you can understand our skepticism after the Derek Jeter message). The guy said he was floored by something that happened that day.

"N.C. State is going to hire Tom O'Brien from Boston College. ... It's a done deal," he said.

The agent said he couldn't believe it was going to happen. The guy wouldn't leave a name or phone number, so we didn't know how accurate his story was. What it did do is put Tom O'Brien's name in our head -- and the next morning, things really heated up. And by Saturday, O'Brien was holding a press conference as N.C. State's new head coach.

That Tuesday night produced two of the strangest phone calls in recent memory. One was right on the mark. One was out of left field -- make that shortstop.
