Jeff Gravley: Season Ends For Duke Seniors On Sour Note

Posted Updated

Boy did LSU's long arms and athleticism bother the heck out of Duke.

The Devils had trouble with athletic teams this year but the Tigers were even more troublesome blocking shots and getting in passing lanes. Yeah the Tigers are young but they got in the heads of Duke early in the 1st half. The Devils didn't finish short shots and barely drew iron on the long shots.

It was a season low in points (54), shooting percentage (27%) led by JJ Redick's 3 for 18 effort. Redick tied a season low with 11 points. What a bad time to have a bad day (except for Shelden Williams).

You hate to see a great career end the way Redick's did but he quickly turned nostalgic after the game saying how great a career and enjoyable ride it was with his fellow senior class. The Duke seniors won 3 ACC championships and went to the 2004 Final 4. DeMarcus Nelson talked about how he hated he couldn't help escort the senior class to another Final 4 and the untimate goal...the national championship. But what a treat it was to watch JJ Redick, Shelden Williams, Sean Dockery and Lee Melchionni play for 4 years!!

Staying and playing for 4 years doesn't happen often these days so we witnessed something unique. Remember it's not life or death...it's just the end of the road for 2 of the greatest players in ACC history.
