Tom Suiter: A Heartbreaking Loss For Duke

Posted Updated

A great, great women's championship game: 78-75 Maryland in overtime. All the drama that the men's final game didn't have. I hope you saw it.

Maryland down 13 points rallies to tie it on a three-point shot by freshman Kristi Toliver over 6-7 Alison Bales to send it to overtime. Duke's Lindsey Harding had a chance at the end of regulation but her off balance shot missed. Then, clutch free throw shooting by the young Terps in overtime ends Duke's dream of a National Titlte.

Duke led just about the entire game, but Maryland kept coming at them. The Terps put five in double figures led by Shay Doron, Laura Harper and Kristi Toliver all with 16. Monique Currie ended her great career with 22 points. Bales had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Duke had this game in hand but Maryland started hitting shots, all kinds of shots and the Blue Devils began to tighten up down the stretch.

A heartbreaking loss for Duke, a tremendous comeback by Maryland. The Championship was Duke's for the taking, but they couldn't get it done at the end.

It was a heartbroken Duke team that left the floor in Boston.

The Terps beat Carolina and Duke back-to-back to win its first National Championship.

I would love to hear your comments on this one. It was a great game to watch.
