Tom Suiter: Two Names Pop Up In Coaching Hunt

Posted Updated

As the weekend approaches, I wanted to let you know what we’ve heard on the State coaching front.

Wolfpack officials have approached Sean Miller, a former assistant under Herb Sendek. He’s been the head coach at Xavier for the past two seasons, and he’s done pretty well, with records of 17-12 and 21-11. He’s 37, and he’s young and has energy and certainly knows the ACC.

Now does being a Herb Sendek disciple hurt him? He might want to be called a Thad Matta disciple.

Also, this is interesting…we hear that Sidney Lowe, the Wolfpack point guard on the 1983 Championship team, is close to getting his degree and would be interested in the job.

Lowe has been an NBA guy. He’s been the head coach at Minnesota and Memphis and currently is an assistant in Detroit. Every time his name has been brought up, the drawback is that he didn’t have a degree. If he does go ahead and get it, I would think he would have to be considered.

On that 1983 team, Lowe was the unquestioned leader. He was a coach on the floor, and he was the one we all went to in the locker room to break things down. Even as a senior, he talked like a coach. He certainly knows what N.C. State and ACC basketball are all about.
