Jeff Gravley: My AP Vote

Posted Updated

For the 2nd consecutive year, I'm fortunate to have a vote in the AP college football poll. It's something I don't take lightly. While I'm not big on preseason polls I put in my 25 top teams. I would rather see the 1st poll released after a month of play but certainly understand having a preseason poll and early polls generate interest and conversation. It's also motivation for coaches and players and it's a way for networks and leagues to promote matchups. My preseason top 5:
1-Ohio State
2-Texas
3-Notre Dame
4-West Virginia
5-Southern Cal

After the 1st weekend of college football my top 5 changed slightly.
My week 1 top 5:
1-Ohio State
2-Texas
3-Notre Dame
4-Southern Cal
5-West Virginia

My preseason poll did not include Tennessee but after that whuppin' they put on "top ten Cal" I moved the Vols to 10th in my poll. USC was another team that really impressed me. QB John David Booty put the football where only his guys could catch it. The national AP poll moves the Trojans from 6 to 3 and dropped Notre Dame from 2nd to 4th. That's a big drop for a team that opens with a win at Georgia Tech. Defensively, the Jackets zone blitz defense of Jon Tenuta is a challenge for a QB to dissect...even Brady Quinn. The top 5 will look different next week after the Ohio State @ Texas rematch. I can't wait for that!!!

So here is my week 1 AP Poll:
1-Ohio State
2-Texas
3-Notre Dame
4-Southern Cal
5-West Virginia
6-Auburn
7-Florida
8-Florida State
9-LSU
10-Tennessee
11-Oklahoma
12-Louisville
13-Virginia Tech
14-Michigan
15-Georgia
16-Iowa
17-Cal
18-Clemson
19-Penn State
20-Miami
21-Oregon
22-Nebraska
23-Alabama
24-TCU
25-Arizona State

Till next week....
