Brad Simmons: Fly Like an Eagle

Posted Updated

Perhaps lost in all the chaos of who is on the hot seat and who isn’t, who’s been hired and who’s been fired at the Triangle universities, is the accomplishment of head football coach Rod Broadway at North Carolina Central.

The Eagles wrapped up their season this past weekend with a tough loss in the Division II playoffs to Delta State. Despite falling short of their ultimate goal of a national championship, 11-1 is quite an accomplishment and this team could very well go down as the best team to ever put on the maroon and gray.

NCCU came into the season replacing several coaches who left for other jobs. Its incumbent quarterback, Adrian Warren, left the team, leaving the Eagles with freshman Stadford Brown to manage the team on the field. Who knew two months later they would be undefeated and celebrating their second straight CIAA title and a No. 1 seed in the Southeast region of the Division II playoffs?

Coach Rod Broadway has steadily built a solid program in his four years in Durham. Each year has brought improvement. Here are the numbers:

Year Record
2003 4-6
2004 8-2
2005 10-2 CIAA Champions
2006 11-1 CIAA Champions

The numbers speak for themselves for the job being done by Coach Broadway and his staf. With the production on the field and support growing off of it, NCCU is ready to take the next step from Division II to Division I.
