A new splash pad is set to open in Fuquay-Varina this summer in the town's South Park.

The 6,000-square-foot splash pad will feature more than 35 water features, according to the town's website. The spot, which will be shaped like a pentagon measuring 93 feet by 89 feet, will include flowing, jetting and misting water structures with zones for different age groups.

The town's Board of Commissioners recently approved the conceptual plan, speeding up a project that wasn't scheduled to open until summer 2016. A year ago, in a survey of town residents, 24 percent said they wanted a splash pad in the town. According to Fuquay-Varina's website, a splash pad was the No. 2 request after improvements to playground equipment at Library Park, which are completed, and Falcon Park, which are in progress.

The splash pad at South Park could open by mid to late summer.

The South Park splash pad will be the first public splash pad to open in southwestern Wake County, beating a planned sprayground in Cary in a park that's scheduled to open in 2016. It likely will be another year before the splash pad at Jack Smith Park in Cary is turned on.
Some seasonal pools and parks in Raleigh and Durham offer splash pads. Hill Ridge Farms in Youngsville also opened one last year. Our public pools database has details about other public splash pads and spraygrounds in the region. Most will open for the season in late May or June.
