Special Session Wrap: Shenanigans time
Just when you thought it was safe to go back onto Jones Street ... Special Session IV: Night of the Shenanigans ... you don't know what legislation awaits you.
Posted — UpdatedLawmakers made quick work Tuesday and Wednesday of a $200 million aid package for victims of Hurricane Matthew and mountain wildfires, but legislative leaders apparently weren't ready to leave Raleigh and called a surprise extra session. Democrats protested the move, saying they had accomplished what they needed to do, but Republicans said more needed to be done.
An elections omnibus bill that would merge the State Board of Elections with the Ethics Commission and make Supreme Court races partisan, among other provisions, was among the bills under consideration. A regulatory reform bill also had been filed, as well as a measure nominating outgoing State Budget Director Drew Heath for a special Superior Court judgeship.
A number of other bills also had been filed by the Wednesday night deadline, but it was unclear how many of those lawmakers would actually take up – or how long they plan to stay in Raleigh.
