Special Ops transport plane loses hatch over Harnett
An emergency hatch broke away from an airplane Friday morning during a routine maintenance flight by the Army's Special Operations Command Flight Detachment, officials said.
Posted — UpdatedThe Casa 212, a turbo-prop, medium transport aircraft, was flying at 9,000 feet about 5 miles southwest of the Harnett Regional Jetport at 10:15 a.m. when a caution light went on to indicate an unsecured door, officials said.
A crew member tried to secure the hatch, but it broke away from the aircraft, officials said. The crew member wasn't injured, and the airplane didn't sustain further damage.
The Army is investigating the incident.
Someone recovered the 18-by-24-inch emergency hatch, but it wasn't immediately clear who found it and where is was found.
