RALEIGH, N.C. — Special Olympics North Carolina marked its 39th anniversary with a new tournament this weekend.

The inaugural Midsummer Tournament for Special Olympics North Carolina was held in Raleigh.

More than 800 athletes competed in equestrian events, bowling and floor hockey.

Special Olympics North Carolina has one of the highest rates of athlete participation in the world among such programs.

The organization offers year-round sports instruction and competition to more than 38,000 children and adults with disabilities.
