Special Olympics kicks off summer games in Raleigh

More than 1,500 athletes will gather in Raleigh and Cary this weekend to compete in the 2015 Special Olympics.

RALEIGH, N.C. — More than 1,500 athletes will gather in Raleigh and Cary this weekend to compete in the 2015 Special Olympics Summer Games.

Athletes will compete in six different sports this year, including, aquatics, athletics, gymnastics, powerlifting, softball and volleyball.

The opening ceremony will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday at the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion in Walnut Creek.
