Speakers announced for Dean Smith memorial

Former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill basketball players Eric Montross and Antawn Jamison are among those who will speak at a public memorial for Dean Smith on Sunday.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill basketball players Eric Montross, Antawn Jamison and  Brad Daugherty are among those who will speak at a public memorial for Dean Smith on Sunday.

Others scheduled to speak include former Georgetown University Men’s Basketball Coach John Thompson, current UNC-CH Men’s Basketball coach Roy Williams and former UNC System President Erskine Bowles. Mickey Bell, Billy Cunningham, Phil Ford and Rev. Robert Seymour will also speak.

Pastor David Chadwick, who also played for Smith, will offer the invocation.

Thousands are expected at the memorial, which will take place at 2 p.m. inside the Dean Smith Center. Smith, who led the Tar Heels to two national titles and 879 wins in a 36-year career as head basketball coach, died on Feb. 7. He was 83-years-old.

WRAL will broadcast the memorial live on television and on WRAL.com. WRAL's Debra Morgan will be live in Chapel Hill and David Crabtree will anchor the event from the WRAL newsroom.
