MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Southwest Airlines announced Wednesday that it would begin daily nonstop service between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and St. Louis next May.

The news comes on the heels of American Airlines’ decision to drop service between RDU and St. Louis next spring. American offers three daily departures to St. Louis, while Southwest will have one daily flight.

“We are very pleased that Southwest recognizes the vitality of RDU’s market and the demand that remains for service to St. Louis,” Teresa Damiano, RDU’s director of marketing, said in a statement.

More than 100,000 people travel between RDU and St. Louis each year, according to Damiano.
