Larry Alexander Leverette, 21, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals Friday after sustaining four gunshot wounds outside Brookside Park Apartments on Richards Street. Police said he was shot three times in the torso and once in the left bicep.

Investigators said Leverette was being watched by UNC-Chapel Hill police department officers Saturday when he escaped around 11:30 a.m. and left the hospital.

Police said Leverette may have left the hospital in a red Jeep Grand Cherokee that was recovered about 2 p.m. from Brookside Park Apartments.

Another man injured in Friday's shooting was taken to Moore County Regional Hospital by car. Police have not released his name or condition but said the two men know each other.

Police said they recovered two semiautomatic handguns and identified several crime scenes. Hours after the shooting, a blaze broke out at one of those locations – 963 Richards St.

Investigators are working to determine the cause and origin of the fire, which happened at 10 p.m. Friday.
