DUNN, N.C. — A babysitter was charged with misdemeanor child abuse after two young children wandered out of their home and across a busy road in Dunn, police said.

The 6-year-old and 3-year-old were found near a gas station at the intersection of U.S. Highway 421 and Erwin Road on Tuesday afternoon. Police took them back to a house on Erwin Road, where they had to repeatedly ring the bell, pound on the front door and shout to get the attention of the babysitter inside.

Brittani Lynette Brooks, 25, of Spring Lake, was sleeping in the house when the children left, police said. She was taken to the Harnett County jail and given a $10,000 secured bond.
