SANFORD, N.C. — The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert Thursday for a 53-year-old Sanford man.

John Edward Blue, who is believed to be suffering from dementia or some other cognitive impairment, was last seen at Central Carolina Hospital and was believed to be headed to Raleigh.

Blue is described as black, about 5 feet 11 inches tall and 180 pounds. He has short black and gray hair and brown eyes and was wearing blue jeans, a blue sweatshirt and black sneakers.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call Detective K.M. Rogers of the Sanford Police Department at 919-775-8268.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
