DURHAM, N.C. — A 78-year-old Durham woman who was the subject of a statewide Silver Alert was found dead inside her wrecked car Monday morning.

Durham police said Monday afternoon that the body of Peggy Conway Riley was found around 9 a.m. inside a tan 1987 Pontiac Bonneville on Camden Avenue, between Midland Terrace and Mist Lake Drive.

Investigators said the car ran off the left side of the road, went down an embankment and landed in a creek bed.

They are still trying to determine when the wreck occurred and what caused it.

Riley was found about 10 miles from her home on Mount Herman Church Road, where she was last seen Sunday.

Authorities issued the Silver Alert for her Sunday evening.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.
