Showers possible on 'cold, blustery' Wednesday

Areas south and east of the Triangle have the best chance for significant rainfall as a stalled cold front hovers over the North Carolina coastline. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will continue to stream into the area throughout the day.

"The showers will be hit or miss in the Triangle, and spots to the north of the area may not see much rain at all," Gardner said. "But we'll be dealing with this all day, so keep the umbrellas handy."

High temperatures will struggle to get out of the 40s during the afternoon, topping out 15 to 20 degrees colder than Tuesday's above-average highs. 

"That cold air and wind will be noticeable when you step outside today," Gardner said. "We'll start the day in the 40s, which is actually above normal for this time of year, but we won't move much all day."

Sunshine will return Thursday as the front moves off the coast, and temperatures will return to the 50s during the afternoon after starting in the mid-30s. 

The warming trend will continue into the weekend, with highs climbing to near 60 degrees on Friday and Saturday and almost 70 degrees on Sunday.

Overnight lows will dip into the 20s Friday morning before returning to the mid-30s over the weekend.
