DURHAM, N.C. — At least one shot was fired when police tried to apprehend a shoplifting suspect at Northgate Mall in Durham on Thursday night, authorities said.

Police confronted Mark Howard Rook, 42, of Hillsborough, in the parking lot outside Sears around 9 p.m. after receiving reports of shoplifting. Officers said that Rook tried to use his vehicle in a manner that threatened them, and he managed to flee the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that a shot was fired during the incident, but no one was injured, officials said.

About an hour later, police tracked Rook to an exit ramp from N.C. Highway 147/Durham Freeway onto Interstate 85. Rook abandoned his vehicle and tried to flee on foot, but police chase him down.

Rook faces multiple charges, including larceny; resist, delay and obstruction; driving with a revoke license; and assault with a deadly weapon on a government official.

The Professional Standards Division of the Durham Police Department started a review, following standard procedure for all incidents involving the discharge of firearms.
