Shooting death of Raleigh man was drug deal gone wrong

Howard, 23, was found Nov. 23 in the 6700 block of Paint Rock Lane. Investigators said that Howard, along with a friend, were at that location to purchase marijuana.

Police said that Jamar Carraway, 28, and an associate arrived at the agreed upon meeting location in a white Lexus and the drug deal turned into an attempted robbery.

According to a search warrant, Howard and his friend attempted to flee the robbery, at which point gunshots were fired toward the wood line in the direction they ran. According to the warrant, witnesses near the crime scene said they saw a white Lexus leaving the scene after shots were fired.

Police said that Howard was shot once in the lower back and ran a short distance before collapsing. He was taken to WakeMed, where he later died.

Jamar Carraway was charged with murder and his brother, Jarrell Carraway, 25 was charged with accessory after the fact.

According to a second search warrant, Jamar Carraway took the gun used to shoot Howard to Jarrell Carraway’s girlfriend’s apartment in Garner after the incident. Police said that a .40 caliber pistol was found on the floor of the apartment on Nov. 24.

According to Howard’s fiancé, Jasmine Dixon, he had been planning to enlist in the U.S. Army in January.

“It is just crazy how everything just happened so fast and we never, I never, expected to lose him,” she said.
