SANFORD, N.C. — A first-grader at B.T. Bullock Elementary School in Sanford is facing juvenile charges of assault and disorderly conduct after deputies say the student tried Monday to assault a teacher with a pair of scissors.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the student also threw items around the classroom and attempted to damage school computers.

The student was restrained and removed from the class by a Lee County school resource officer.

"The teacher followed the correct procedures to remove students from the classroom to ensure their safety and immediately elicited the help of administration and the school resource officer to assist," said Sharon Spence of Lee County Schools. "At no time was there a threat to the rest of the school community."

Officials said the student and his mother will be summoned to court and have the case heard in front of a District Court judge, which could include probation or community service.

No other information about the incident was released.
