GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Reports of a man enticing children at a bus stop to get into his car turned out to be false, Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders said Friday.

The sheriff's office received two reports about such an incident in the 3000 block of Stevens Mill Road Thursday morning, Winders said. Investigators spoke to a person in the area and determined he had no criminal intentions.

"This complete matter is a misunderstanding," Winders said. "Many rumors have started with this report, but all have proven unfounded. The person in question is a law-abiding citizen with no criminal history."

Winders encouraged residents to keep reporting suspicious activity.

"We would much rather investigate something that proves to be innocent than to learn about it after a tragedy," he said.
