Homes, vehicles damaged by hail in Franklin County

Hail varying in size, from golf ball to billiards, was reported across the area, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.

One man was transported to the hospital after he was hit by hail, said Lewis, who added that the weather also caused three vehicle wrecks. No serious injuries were reported.

Less than 200 customers in Franklin County were without power Wednesday night.

“During the height of it, it sounded like someone was pounding on the roof and the sides of the house,” said Don Grubb, whose vehicles and home were damaged by hail. “It was very scary. We went to the center of the house and when the back windows blew out, the glass and hail stones were halfway into the living room. The couch where we were sitting and watching TV is all covered with broken glass.”

Judy Pearce said the sound of the hail was scary.

"It was like machine guns going off through my house," she said. "It scared me so bad that I got under my kitchen table and prayed to the Lord that it would stop and everybody would be safe."

Anita Pearce, Judy Pearce's daughter-in-law, said the weather hit while she was in Youngsville.

"My husband called and said, 'don't come home, there is a hail storm,'" she said. "So I stayed for 20 minutes and came home to find this."

Pearce said her 6-month-old camper looked like it had been "in a war."

"I've never seen hail do that kind of damage," she said.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Wake, Johnston, Franklin, Nash, Vance, Nash and Granville counties Wednesday night.

Wilson and Wayne counties are under a similar warning until 10:45 p.m.

Temperatures in Raleigh will reach 75 degrees on Thursday and 82 degrees on Friday, which is when the area may experience another round of severe weather, Maze said.
