Senate takes action on biscuits, SBI director, GPS stalking

Senators used their floor session Thursday to get through a number of non-controversial bills, including the confirmation of B.W. Collier to be director of the SBI.

Senators sped through a number of relatively uncontroversial items during their floor session Thursday.

The following bills were among the business completed:

BISCUITS: Those grabbing breakfast at their local mini-mart would be able to grab a seat as well, under a bill that cleared the state Senate. The measure, put forward by Sen. Jerry Tillman, R-Randolph, would help small businesses that use well and septic systems for water and sewer but aren't licensed as restaurants. Senate Bill 7 now goes to the House.

SBI CONFIRMATION: Senators confirmed B.W. Collier to an eight-year term as director of the State Bureau of Investigation. Collier, a 26-year veteran of the SBI, was nominated by Gov. Pat McCrory to be the first head of the newly independent agency. Collier's nomination had been caught up in a spat between the governor and the legislature over other nominations, which appears to have passed.

GPS TRACKING: Senators voted 44-0 to make stalking someone by using a GPS device a criminal offense. The bill applies to tracking devices installed on cars but exempts a car's owner and police from the prohibition. Senate Bill 238 now goes to the House.
