PRINCETON, N.C. — A semi-truck cab hit an elderly man who had just finished mowing his lawn and then plowed into a house along Luby Smith Road, off U.S. Highway 70, in Princeton Monday morning.

State troopers said William Godwin, 71, was standing partially in the road and blowing clippings in his yard. The truck hit him, and driver Theresa Morgan lost control and veered to the opposite side of the road. The truck knocked over a power pole and then slammed into the house at 389 Luby Smith Road, troopers said.

Paramedics transported Godwin to Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, where he was listed in critical condition.

No one was in the house when it was hit.

Troopers said an initial investigation appeared to indicate negligence on both parts, since Godwin was in the road and Morgan had enough time to react.

Troopers said they were talking to Morgan, who wasn't seriously hurt. She is an employee of K&E Farms in Princeton.
