LAURINBURG, N.C. — State agents are looking into the operations of the Scotland County Sheriff's Office, authorities said Wednesday.

Noelle Talley, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Justice, confirmed that the State Bureau of Investigation is in the preliminary stages of an investigation of the sheriff's office.

Details of the probe weren't disclosed, but Talley said it was prompted by Scotland County District Attorney Kristy Newton.

Special prosecutors in the state Attorney General's Office will review the findings of the investigation once it is complete to determine if any criminal charges are warranted, Talley said.
