DURHAM, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations that an undercover drug officer with the Durham County Sheriff's Office mishandled money, authorities said.

The Durham County District Attorney's Office requested the investigation last week, said Noelle Talley, a spokesman for the state Department of Justice.

The undercover officer no longer works with the sheriff's office, Talley said. His name hasn't been released.

Undercover officers routinely use money from an account in the sheriff's office to make drug buys that can serve as evidence for criminal charges. There was no word on how much money might have been misused.
