SANFORD, N.C. — One person died Monday morning in a Lee County wreck involving a tractor-trailer and an SUV, authorities said.

The wreck occurred at about 9:45 a.m. on Swanns Station Road at Pecan Lane in southern Lee County, near the Harnett County line.

Highway Patrol troopers said an Isuzu Trooper apparently crossed the center line and collided head-on with the truck, and the SUV driver was killed.

The truck driver was uninjured but was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution, authorities said.

The crumpled SUV and the cab of the truck, which was hauling rocks, caught fire, and firefighters had to douse the flames before investigators could pry the wreckage apart and begin piecing together what happened.

Troopers said they would have to wait for a medical examiner to use dental records to identify the driver.

Witnesses said a woman pulled up to the scene a few hours after the wreck and tearfully said her grandson, who had recently gotten his driver's license, was driving the Isuzu.
