Sanford man charged with robbery of 94-year-old woman

​Police responded to a robbery Wednesday morning at the Save A Lot grocery store in Sanford, located at 1946 S. Horner Blvd.

SANFORD, N.C. — Police responded to a robbery Wednesday morning at the Save A Lot grocery store in Sanford, located at 1946 S. Horner Blvd.

Authorities said they found Esther McAuley, 94, at about 11:30 a.m. McAuley said a white male grabbed her purse, causing her to fall to the ground, while she was walking to her car from the store.

McAuley was transported and treated for her injuries at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford. Hospital officials said she suffered a “few fractures” from the incident but was listed in good condition.

Officials located and arrested the suspect, Wilbur Kial Cofery, 20, of 1419 Post Office Road, less than 20 minutes after the crime. He was charged with common law robbery, aggravated assault on a handicapped person and possession of stolen property.

Cofrey was being jailed under a $5,000 secured bond.
