A Sanford man was arrested last week after authorities said he assaulted Cameron Police Chief Gary McDonald, causing the chief to lose consciousness.

Investigators from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said the assault happened Thursday while McDonald was patrolling Carthage Street. The chief was checking on people in a car that was in a ditch near railroad tracks when one of the occupants attacked him. The assailant ran into the woods after the attack.

Sheriff’s deputies from Moore and Lee counties identified Jason Roy Brazell, 31, of 619 Hawkins Ave., as a suspect and arrested him Friday. Brazell was charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

He was held at the Moore County Detention Center under $12,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is set for Dec. 6.

Authorities did not release further information about the attack or McDonald’s condition.
