SALISBURY, N.C. — Police say 8-year-old Kymello McLane was playing with friends at Salisbury's Hurley Park when he fell through thin ice on a pond Sunday afternoon and drowned.

Kymello fell on his back, his friends told police, and crashed through the ice. The friends, both 11, said they tried to hold out sticks to pull him up but could not reach. Then they called 911.

"I just can't picture him being under there for 10 minutes in the cold and the hypothermia," a neighbor said.

A woman who watched as rescue crews worked to find the boy under the ice said she was shaken by what she saw.

"I could see the guy in the boat, you know, with a pole," she said. "Obviously he was trying to find somebody."

Kymello was rushed to Rowan Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

His father told reporters that his son was "a great son."

"He was above his time, and I love him," Tony McLane said. "He was the greatest kid in the world."
