Roof of Vass church collapses

No one was inside Covenant Christian Church, on U.S. Highway 1, when the roof collapsed shortly after 2 p.m., authorities said.

The church's pastor told authorities that a contractor was hired several months ago to replace the building's roof, and the contractor removed some support structures during the work. Church members have been meeting elsewhere since last month because the roof was sagging so much, the pastor told authorities.
