ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A Rocky Mount businessman faces charges for embezzling thousands of dollars from the government.

George Carlton Brown, 40, of 4800 Ashton Road, is accused of stealing more than $30,000 in state and local sales tax over an 11-month period.

Investigators said the money came from sales tax collected from Jan. 1, 2006, to Nov. 30, 2006, at Stone Innovations by Lumina LLC, a Rocky Mount countertop company, in which Brown was a partner at the time.

Brown is charged with one count of aiding and abetting embezzlement of state property and one count of aiding and abetting embezzlement of county property.

He was out of jail Friday afternoon on a $30,000 bond.
