Robeson man charged in niece's death

LUMBERTON, N.C. — A Robeson County man was charged Sunday with the beating death of his niece.
Derrick Vanlanot has been named as a suspect in the death of Clara Slayton, 3.
Clara was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center on Friday where employees noticed signs of abuse. She died Saturday afternoon. Her cause of death was blunt-force trauma, according to the Robeson County Sheriff's Office.
Clara had been living with Vanlanot, her uncle, since January.
He was being held in the Robeson County jail without bail on Monday evening.
