Roanoke Rapids officer injured in wreck
A Roanoke Rapids police officer was injured in a single-vehicle wreck while responding to a robbery in progress at a local business early Thursday, Chief Jeff Hinton said.
Posted — UpdatedState troopers said that Officer M.T. Peck lost control of his cruiser and spun out at Julian R. Allsbrook Highway and Marshall Street shortly after midnight. The rear of the cruiser struck a tree, sending the car back into the middle of the road, where it came to rest.
Peck was wearing a set belt, but the crash pushed him through the left, rear window. The impact also crushed the back bumper into the rear, center window.
Troopers said Peck had some broken bones but was expected to be OK. He was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center, then transferred to Pitt Regional Memorial Medical Center in Greenville, Hinton said.
Troopers said rain and wet roads were a factor in the wreck. Peck had the cruiser's lights and sirens on, troopers said. They did not expect to file charges.
