Rising construction costs put Raleigh's Union Station over budget
Rising costs of construction and materials have the Union Station project in Raleigh running about $10 million over its $80 million budget, city leaders said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Rising costs of construction and materials have the Union Station project in Raleigh running about $10 million over budget, city leaders said.
Construction of the passenger rail station, scheduled to open in 2017, is funded through a mix of federal and local dollars. It includes a $15 million contribution from the state Department of Transportation and $10 million from a federal governement grant.
The city's contribution was expected to total between $18 million and $19 million, but the overrun leaves the city with nearly a $3 million budget gap.
Planning for the station has been in the works since the 1990s and has long been a part of the city's draft master plan. Construction of the facility is a joint project between the Department of Transportation and the City of Raleigh as part of an effort to improve the rail corridor between the capital city and Charlotte.
