WILMINGTON, N.C. — Two men died and one woman was injured Friday afternoon in a shooting near a Walmart in Wilmington, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened at the Murphys gas station at about 4 p.m. in the 5100 block of Carolina Beach Road, an area referred to as Monkey Junction.

According to authorities, Richard Albert Nielsen, 62, approached Russell Allen Mitchell, 38, called him by name then shot him in the head. Authorities said Nielsen then walked to a car parked at a gas pump and shot Jessica Lynn Modolo, 29, twice, once in the stomach and once in the head. Nielsen then committed suicide with a gunshot to his head.

According to authorities, Modolo was pregnant and her unborn child did not survive. Modolo was taken to the New Hanover County Regional Medical Center where she was being treated for life-threatening injuries. Mitchell and Nielsen were both pronounced dead at the scene.

A larceny report was filed on Feb. 5 claiming Nielsen stole more than $4,000 worth of lawn equipment. According to authorities, Nielsen told his family he would not go to jail over the claims.

The investigation is ongoing.

No additional information was immediately released.
