WILSON, N.C. — Authorities on Wednesday identified remains found last month in Wilson County.

A logging crew found the remains in a wooded area off Bloomery Road on Oct. 17, and the State Medical Examiner's Office in Greenville, the East Carolina University Department of Anthropology and the Wilson County Medical Examiner's Office spent recent weeks generating possible leads as to the person's identity.

Based on those leads, Wilson County Sheriff's Office investigators interviewed nearby residents and determined the remains were those of Leonard Houston Vanosdol, of Wilson. The identity was confirmed through comparison of medical records and more interviews with family members, authorities said.

There was no indication of foul play in the death, and evidence at the scene led investigators to conclude that Vanosdol died of a pre-existing medical condition, authorities said.

The remains were in the woods for at least three years, authorities said.
