FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police on Monday identified human remains found a week ago as those of a Fayetteville man missing for more than a year.

A man searching a field off Eastwood Avenue for scrap metal came across the remains on Sept. 26, police said.

A medical examiner confirmed the remains were Anthony Carrol Hayes, 52, who was last seen at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Fayetteville in January 2010.

Detectives also found Hayes' hospital ID bracelet in the pocket of the pants found on the remains.

The cause of death still hasn't been determined, police said.
