RED SPRINGS, N.C. — Red Springs police are continuing their search for two men who entered a Roscoe's convenience store Thursday night and shot two people, injuring a store clerk and killing a customer.

The shooting happened at about 7 p.m. at Roscoe's Convenience Store, at 400 North Main Street. Clerk Rodney Maynard was shot in the shoulder, and customer James Johnson was killed.

Police say two armed men wearing hoodies and bandanas entered the store and demanded money before firing shots.

Maynard said two shots were aimed at him.

"I turned to run behind the ice maker and I got hit in the back," Maynard said.

Maynard described Johnson as a regular customer and a friend.

"He had no chance," he said. "I think he still had his hands in his pockets when he was hit."

Jerry McDowell, who lives next to Johnson's home, said he arrived at the store shortly after the shooting.

"I seen, like, two guys running behind the store. But the guy that work at the store was holding his shoulder, and I didn't know what had happened to him," McDowell said.

"A senseless act," Maynard said. "Mr. Johnson was murdered for no reason at all."

Anyone with information about the shooting should call Red Springs police at 910-843-3454.
