As traditional park programs are canceled or moved online during COVID, one new opportunity is popping up more and more across the Triangle: StoryWalks.

StoryWalks take place along park paths where you'll find laminated pages of a picture book posted. Families can read the book as they walk outside. The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson in Vermont with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library back in 2007. During COVID, they offer a nice, drop-in opportunity for families to have a little fun outside, socially distanced from others. They're perfect for toddlers, preschoolers and grade schoolers who are just learning to read.

I've written about the StoryWalks at Historic Oak View County Park, Pullen Park and in Apex. And more continue to pop up. Here's where you can find eight StoryWalks in the Triangle in February.

Historic Oak View County Park

Oak View is one of the first parks to offer a StoryWalk during COVID. This month's book is "We March," by Shane W. Evans. It celebrates the 1963 March on Washington. After reading the book, you also can visit the park's goats from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday. The book will be on view through Feb. 28. More information is on the park's Facebook page.

Triangle Land Conservancy Preserves

The nonprofit has StoryWalks at two of its locations this month that are all about the birds in honor of the Great Backyard Bird Count. "Counting is for the Birds" by Frank Mazzola will be featured at Horton Grove Nature Preserve. "Ruby’s Birds" by Mya Thompson will be at the Bailey and Sarah Williamson Preserve. The StoryWalks will be available through Feb. 26.

Harris Lake County Park

From Feb. 13 to Feb. 28, the Wake County park in New Hill will showcase "Hear Your Heart," by Paul Showers.

Crowder County Park

The Wake County park in Apex will be featuring "Slugs in Love" by Susan Pearson through Feb. 21. It's located at the park's Outer Loop Trail, starting at the park's Bird Garden.

Blue Jay Point County Park

The Wake County park in north Raleigh will feature the picture book "Snowy Valentine," by David Petersen through Feb. 28. Find it along the Laurel Loop Trail. On the back of each storybook page, according to the park's Facebook page, there's some information about activities you can do at home. You can pick up a craft kit for one of the activities on the front porch of the park's Education Center.

Seagroves Farm Park

The Apex park's StoryWalk features the book "Love Monster" this month.

Moore Square

Starting Feb. 11, the downtown Raleigh park will offer a StoryWalk through the end of February, starting Feb. 11. The first featured book is "Ruby Joins the Choir," by Raleigh author R.K. Barrett.
