Raleigh woman remembers serving in WWII
Betsy Hutchison, a 95-year-old Raleigh woman, can still recall her words of comfort to one solider while she served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Posted — Updated"So many of them looked to us as mothers," she said. "We were a mother to them. They were in pain. They were away from home."
Hutchison was in Belgium for the Battle of the Bulge and in France for D-Day.
"I stepped out of the tent that morning and the sky was black with planes," she said. "Those were brave young men flying into enemy territory to preserve our peace. I will never forget the drone of those planes. It is embedded in my ears forever, the drone of those planes."
Hutchison said she served as a nurse in many of the hot spots and can still remember telling one solider, "You're going to feel better. We are taking care of you, and you're going to be better."
When asked what she would like to see people doing on Memorial Day, Hutchison said she would like to see others hang their American flag in honor of those who have fought for the country.
On Monday, she will put on her Army uniform and lay a memorial wreath at Oakwood Cemetery.
