Raleigh woman charged with assaulting, injuring 7-year-old child

A Raleigh woman was arrested Saturday and charged with assaulting and severely injuring her 7-year-old child, authorities said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh woman was arrested Saturday and charged with assaulting and severely injuring her 7-year-old child, authorities said.

Shawna Lea Sowder, 42, of 208 Mount Vernon Church Road, is charged with one count of felony intentional child abuse and assault on a child under the age of 12. According to warrants, Sowder hit the child, grabbed the child's throat and broke the child's arm on Nov. 15.

Sowder was jailed under an $85,000 secured bond. She was expected to make her first court appearance Monday.
