Raleigh City Council on Tuesday agreed to a recommendation that would ban dogs and other pets from playgrounds in the parks system.

Council members have not yet voted on the recommendation, so it is unclear when the ban would take effect.

Council also said it is considering other pet restrictions for the city’s parks and greenways and asked staff and advisory board to develop recommendations for new dog parks.

City leaders said the recommendation is the result of numerous complaints from residents over the past several years about dogs running at large and animal waste in public places.
