RALEIGH, N.C. — Curbside garbage collection has saved the city more than $3.8 million in the past year, officials said.

"Our move to automated garbage collection has allowed the city to save money and keep up with significant growth," Solid Waste Services Director Fred Battle said in a statement.

Using garbage trucks with mechanical arms to empty trash cans also has reduced the number of workers' compensation claims filed by garbage collectors, officials said. Since August 2005, the number of work-related accidents has dropped by about 39 percent each month, officials said.
