RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police waited outside Wayside Apartments on Garner Road near Chavis Park Thursday for almost nine hours as a resident there refused to talk to them.

Capt. Andy Murr said police arrived about 2 p.m. to serve an involuntary mental commitment order, but the man in question refused to come outside.

“The subject displayed a knife, retreated into his apartment and barricaded the door," Murr said.

Just after 10 p.m., police fired gas canisters through a window, and the man walked to the door. He was unarmed and was taken for a mental evaluation.
