RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wendell man died early Saturday when his car slammed into a tree at more than 100 mph in a case of suspected drunken driving, Raleigh police said.

Alford Wendell Brown, 47, was going 109 mph west on Six Forks Road, near Wake Forest Road, around 12:35 a.m. when he lost control of his 2002 Volvo. It ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree, ejecting Brown.

The results of alcohol tests on Brown are pending. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
