Raleigh is making some big changes to its popular Holiday Express at Pullen Park to reduce wait times and better plan for bad weather.

The Christmas event has sold out for the last few years since Pullen reopened after a major renovation. In December, inclement weather forced park staff to cancel some nights and allow ticket holders to attend on other nights. That meant more people were packed into the park for the already popular event.

City park officials say the changes are based on feedback shared by those who attended the 2013 event.

Here are the changes:

  • The city will decrease the number of tickets sold for each night to reduce wait times for activities.
  • The city will add two additional nights to offer families more flexibility. The event will now run Thursday to Sunday instead of Friday to Sunday.
  • When you purchase tickets to Holiday Express, you will select a specific train ride time. While you may enjoy other activities throughout the duration of the event, having a specific train ride time will reduce wait time for this popular activity.
  • The city will plan for additional inclement weather days.

The 2014 Holiday Express is scheduled for Dec. 4 to Dec. 7 and Dec. 11 to Dec. 14. Tickets go on sale July 29.
