Raleigh man sentenced to 17 years for 2014 Scotty McCreery robbery

Mikkail Jamal Shaw, of 2904 Nina Court, on Monday pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree kidnapping, three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of burglary and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.

McCreery and other victims were in the Wake County courtroom on Tuesday.

A judge sentenced Shaw to a of minimum 204 months in prison, and the remaining offenses were consolidated. Shaw will also have to participate in mental health counseling and vocational training while in prison.

Shaw's grandfather addressed the court, saying he raised Shaw from when he was a baby until he was 19 years old. His grandfather said Shaw was a good person who made a bad decision after getting involved with the wrong people.

"I know my grandson very well," his grandfather said, adding "He's not a leader. He's a follower."

McCreery was visiting an apartment at 2130 Wolftech Lane around 2 a.m. on May 5, 2014, when, according to arrest warrants, Shaw and two other men allegedly forced their way inside and held the country singer and three of his friends at gunpoint.

"I made a very bad decision and I apologize for that," Shaw said in court. "I pray the victims can forgive me for what I have done."

Arrest warrants say the alleged robbers stole wallets, about $800 in cash, cellphones and a laptop computer.
