WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A Raleigh man died late Monday when his mo-ped was hit by a van in Wake Forest, authorities said Tuesday.

Thomas William Smart IV, 49, of Quail Ridge Road, was eastbound on Jenkins Road at about 9:30 p.m. and was trying to cross Capital Boulevard to Stadium Drive when the crash occurred, authorities said.

Smart was pronounced dead at WakeMed.

Initial reports indicate he ran a red light before a northbound passenger van, driven by John Wesley Elliott, 60, of Henderson, hit him, authorities said. No charges are expected against Elliott.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities said it's unclear whether alcohol was a factor.
